What is the Silent Sleep™ appliance?

"About a year ago a colleague of mine asked me if I could develop an oral appliance for the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring that could be used as an inexpensive alternative to custom made oral appliances.  This request came out of a desire to help people suffering with sleep apnea and snoring in countries where they cannot afford CPAP or custom made oral appliances.  After several months of development, prototypes, and trials, I developed what I believe to be the best non-custom oral appliance currently available.  I have named it the “Silent Sleep™”.

In creating the Silent Sleep™ I tried to develop a pre-fabricated, customizable appliance that:

• Had maximum tongue space and wasn’t overly bulky.
• Was comfortable for the patient to wear.
• Was easy to fit and didn’t require boiling.
• Was easy for the dentist to adjust.

Would last a reasonable amount of time with proper care

The Silent Sleep™ is not intended to be a replacement for custom appliances, but rather another tool to help you in the treatment of patients with snoring and sleep apnea.  I believe that the Silent Sleep™ will become an invaluable addition to your armamentarium of custom appliances, CPAP/oral appliance combination appliances, and other treatments that you are providing to your sleep disordered breathing patients.  It is my hope that use of the Silent Sleep™ will significantly increase the number of patients that you are able to help in your community; and as you improve the health of your patients, improve the financial health of your practice as well.

Possible uses for the Silent Sleep™:

• A temporary appliance while a custom made appliance is fabricated.
• A spare appliance for travel or camping.
• A trial appliance for patients who are uncertain about oral appliance therapy.
• An immediate-fit appliance in the sleep lab for patients who are found during the CPAP titration to be CPAP intolerant.
• A lower cost alternative to custom made appliances when treating patients who have been diagnosed by their physician as “primary snorers” and have no insurance coverage, or otherwise have limited financial resources.
• A primary treatment appliance for children; alone or in conjunction with orthodontic appliances.

The Silent Sleep™ appliance is intended for use as a temporary or trial device in the diagnosis and treatment of snoring and non-central obstructive sleep apnea, by prescription only and under the direction of a dentist or physician. The Silent Sleep™ is intended to be used as a temporary or trial appliance, and is not intended to be used for more than 30 days.
